What Is a Botnet?

A botnet is a network of malware-infected devices (so-called bots or zombies) under the control of a hacker (the botmaster or bot herder). A botmaster controls every bot in the botnet remotely and can direct the infected devices to perform tasks collectively (e.g., launch a DDoS attack or send spam emails).
